Pain Point Analysis
Modern Mechanical Adjustable Dumbbells (Twist to adjust): While they offer rapid weight changes, their highly complex internal mechanisms often result in a less-than-smooth experience when handling heavy weights. User feedback indicates frequent jamming when returning the dumbbells to their cradles. Furthermore, most products on the market have a critical limitation: they cannot be upgraded for heavier weights in the future. Their long-term durability is also compromised by the reliance on plastic parts, while some models have sharp edges that can compromise safety during training. They also tend to come with relatively short warranty periods.
Traditional Spinlock Steel Dumbbells:
Advantages (Strong and Safe): A highly popular choice for heavy weight training because the spinlock mechanism provides a secure hold, effectively preventing weight plates from slipping.
Limitations and Common Issues:
- Limited Weight Upgradability: Standard dumbbell sets usually max out at 20 kg per handle. To increase the weight later, users must purchase new, longer dumbbell handles.
- Overly Thick Cast Iron Plates: Older cast iron plates are limited by their thickness. The more weight you add, the longer the dumbbell becomes. Furthermore, swapping plates is tedious. For instance, heavy lifters often load their dumbbells with 5-10 kg plates. To reduce the dumbbell weight by 5 kg, they must waste time removing a 5 kg plate from both sides (-10 kg) and then put back two 2.5 kg plates (+5 kg). This makes changing weight plates cumbersome and time-consuming.
- Lack of Maneuverability Due to Excessive Length: The ends of the threaded shaft often protrude, making the dumbbell unwieldy and obstructive during workouts. Additionally, the long thread length requires more time to screw the collars on and off.
Our Product Development
1. Locking System Development Concept
Currently, threaded dumbbell systems can be classified into 3 main categories
Traditional Spinlock Dumbbell Handles: (B) Features a threaded shaft extending outward from the handle, using an external spinlock collar to secure the weight plates.
Dumbbell Handles with Internal Threads: (A) Conceals the threading inside the handle and uses a rotating knob to lock the weight plates, resulting in a compact dumbbell with no protruding threaded shaft.
Modern Adjustable Dumbbells: Utilizes an internal mechanism for selecting and locking weight plates. While enabling fast weight changes, its structure is highly complex and involves numerous components.
Design: By studying the pros and cons of each type, we decided to innovate upon the Dumbbell handles with internal threads because of its sturdy, simple, and reliable construction. We designed the locking knob —which traditionally only secures the weight plates—to become detachable when unscrewed just 1–2 turns. This clears the locking mechanism and allows the knob to be removed, meaning weight plates can be swapped out instantly over the thread head without fully unscrewing the thread.
Safety: We prioritize safety above all else. By partnering with a manufacturer specializing in lock threads, our locking mechanism guarantees precision and a secure hold. We stick with the threaded locking mechanism because its status can be visually confirmed and physically felt immediately if it begins to loosen, offering greater safety as it leverages a familiar usage pattern.
2. Weight Plates Development Concept
2.5 KG Weight Plate Design: We use clean, high-quality steel plates precisely cut with Fiber Laser Cutting. This modern manufacturing process makes our weight plates thinner than traditional cast iron. The 2.5 kg weight plate, which is only 10 mm thick, allows you to increase or decrease the total weight by 5 kg at a time.

SolidBell was born from my passion for working out at home. With a rather fast-paced lifestyle, training at home saves time, eliminates the commute, cuts down on monthly gym fees, and allows me to exercise in a cleaner, more convenient environment. However, I couldn't find adjustable dumbbells that felt as sturdy and reassuring as commercial gym equipment. Fixed-weight dumbbells are expensive and take up a lot of storage space, while many adjustable dumbbells use plastic parts and overly complex mechanisms.
Therefore, I set out to create a product for those serious about weight training, emphasizing strength and the reliability of the locking mechanism without relying on fragile plastic parts. The most crucial aspect was designing a compact, perfectly balanced form that never gets in the way of your movements, giving you the same confidence and natural feel as premium fixed dumbbells found in commercial gyms.
